When you reach for a strap on the commuter train, the armholes feel tight. When you pull a suitcase on a business trip, you feel stress on your back and shoulders. Suits are worn in a variety of business situations and must be able to accommodate a variety of postures and movements. Wanting to alleviate even a little of the discomfort felt in suits, Aoyama Clothing began developing a new suit that is "stylish yet comfortable to wear."

The weight of the suit is placed on only limited parts of the body, and if the size and position of the armholes are not suitable for the body, the armpits are pushed up and feel cramped. The characteristic of the "suit that doesn't hurt the shoulders" is that it is made of elastic fabric and is three-dimensionally designed to wrap around the Japanese body type. We aimed to create a suit that fits the shoulders perfectly, looks cool, and is light enough to wear.

The evolution of fabric

Made with a new 100% polyester material that has moderate elasticity and tension, and a supple texture like wool for improved comfort.

It can be washed at home, and you can choose how to wash it, such as by washing machine or shower clean. You can also spot wash small stains, such as washing only a jacket or pants.

A new method has been adopted for attaching the armhole lining.

When you move your arms, tension is reduced and the range of motion is increased.

The comfort of clothing and textile products is a subjective matter, but we are conducting research to quantify this from the material properties and objectively evaluate the feel of the fabric, thermal comfort, and ease of movement.

In this joint research project, we measured the pressure (clothing pressure) applied when moving around in the suit in order to quantify the ease of movement. We had difficulty attaching the pressure sensors because pressure is applied to different parts of the body depending on the person. There was a clear difference in the fit when raising and lowering the arms, but we did not expect the data to differ to such an extent.

S1 is the conventional suit, and N2 is the developed suit. The vertical axis shows the clothing pressure when the wearer raises or turns their arms along the time on the horizontal axis. The higher the value on the vertical axis, the greater the pressure on the body, indicating that it is difficult to move.

There is no feeling of tightness,
Easy movement of shoulders and arms

When I stretched, I felt that the conventional suit and the "shoulder-friendly suit" were completely different. With the conventional suit, there was a feeling of tightness in the armpits, and when I stretched my arms, it felt like the brakes were suddenly applied.
